Course Content

The learner will gain knowledge in the assessment and clinical management of fearful and avoidant dental patients so that the learner will be able to recognize and manage dental fear and avoidance more effectively in their clinical practice.

 

Educational Objectives

At completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

 

  1. Describe the common physiological and behavioral signs which may indicate that a patient is anxious, fearful, or phobic.
  2. Describe how fearful patients can disrupt dental practice.
  3. Cite research findings regarding the most fearful aspects of dental treatment and the prevalence of dental fear.
  4. Identify etiological factors that contribute to dental fear.
  5. Describe the relationship between fear and pain as well as between control and pain.
  6. Given an anxious patient, describe behavioral management procedures to control pain.
  7. List the four types of dental fear and how to distinguish among them.
  8. Specify dental environment characteristics which increase anxiety in the fearful patient.
  9. Specify interview questions which elicit patient concerns and help develop and effective management strategy.
  10. Specify how different types of dental fear are best managed.
  11. Describe how to best manage a patient that reports previous suboptimal local anesthesia.
  12. Describe how to prevent or minimize post-operative problems with fearful patients.
  13. Specify how pharmacologic techniques can be combined with behavioral techniques to control patient anxiety.
  14. Describe procedures to enhance patients' coping.
  15. Describe procedures to enhance patients' feelings of control.

 

Required Text:

  • Milgrom, Weinstein, and Getz, Treating Fearful Dental Patients: A Patient         Management Handbook, 2nd ed.
  • A syllabus with additional readings will be made available to the participant by the    instructor once registration has been received.

 

Dr. Philip Weinstein is a Professor of Dental Public Health Sciences and Adjunct Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and Psychology at the University of Washington. He is the Director of the Dental Behavioral Science Research Program at the University of Washington and co-Director of the Dental Fears Research clinic, where he maintains a private practice.
