Course Content

The learner will gain knowledge in the different types of nicotine use (including cigarette smoking and smokeless tobacco), the health consequences of nicotine use, and factors contributing to nicotine use. The learner will also gain knowledge in behavioral and pharmacological methods of smoking cessation in order to help their patients avoid use of tobacco products.

 

Educational Objectives

At completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

 

  1. Describe the prevalence of tobacco use in the United States, including cigarettes and smokeless tobacco.
  2. Describe the various types of nicotine use, including cigarettes and the different types of smokeless tobacco.
  3. Identify various factors that contribute to patients' use of tobacco products.
  4. Discuss smoking cessation with patients in such a way that encourages patients to examine their tobacco use, and avoids judgmental statements and "lectures."
  5. Discuss and develop a "game plan" with patients to help stop using tobacco products, including both behavioral and pharmacological methods.
  6. Identify several behavioral methods for smoking cessation.
  7. Identify several pharmacological methods for smoking cessation.
  8. Describe how behavioral and pharmacological methods may be combined to help patients achieve successful smoking cessation.
  9. Discuss barriers to quitting with patients, and identify factors that may serve as barriers' to patients' smoking cessation goals.
  10. Identify several resources that may be used by the practitioner and patients to develop a smoking cessation plan.

 

 Required Text:

  • Weinstein and Milgrom, Oral Self Care: Strategies for Preventive Dentistry, 4th ed.
  • A syllabus with additional readings will be made available to the participant by the    instructor once registration has been received.

 

Dr. Lisa Heaton is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Senior Fellow in Dental Public Health Sciences at the University of Washington. She has co-authored several peer-reviewed journal articles and conference presentations in the field of dental fear, issues in dental education, and psychosocial factors in chronic orofacial pain. Dr. Heaton works with patients in the Dental Fears Research Clinic and conducts research in the treatment of dental fear and other issues of access to dental care.

 

Dr. Philip Weinstein is Professor of Dental Public Health Sciences and Adjunct Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and Psychology at the University of Washington. A Licensed Clinical Psychologist, he is the Director of the Dental Behavioral Science Research Program at the University of Washington and co-Director of the Dental Fears Research clinic, where he maintains a private practice.
