Required Prerequisite Course: Dental Ethics and Conduct
Dates and Venue : This course will involve a half-day seminar and
assessment followed by 15 hours of supervised pediatric patient care in the
enrollees office involving not less than 5 patients. The instructors will
determine the venue for the seminar instruction within Seattle.
Cost : $7300. If the enrollee's office is outside of the Seattle area
an additional cost will be that of travel, accomodation, and per diem for the instructor.

Course Content
This course is designed to build on the Dental Ethics and Conduct course.
Enrollment is limited dentists or dental hygienists who may under discipline by licensing
boards or other regulatory agencies. Any licensed professional practicing within the
United States may enroll.
The goals of this course are to provide information about the care of children and state
regulations and to provide skills instruction through supervised patient care and
experiences that will lead to improved clinical decisions and problem solving.
Educational Objectives
At completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Identify short and long-term goals of dental visits.
- Specify the etiology of dental fear and avoidance.
- Describe the behaviors of fearful children.
- Specify child management techniques that have been shown to decrease child fear or to
increase child fear.
- Describe effective and ineffective communication with preschool, school age, and teenage
children.
- Demonstrate effective communication with the above.
- Specify appropriate child management techniques in response to scenarios involving
children of various ages, teens, and parents.
- Specify the relationship among fear and pain and control.
- Describe the behavior of a distrustful child and appropriate management strategies.
- Describe and demonstrate needle desensitization and gradual exposure for gagging for
children and teens.
- Understand the principles of pain control with preschoolers and school-age children and
demonstrate their use.
- Understand the principles of adjunctive sedative drug use in the care of children.
- Specify the dental treatment alternatives to accommodate the needs of children who may
be fearful or unable to cooperate.
- Work with dental office paraprofessionals to accomplish dental treatment for children
using the principles in the course.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate with parents regarding the care of children.
Required Texts:
The required texts are Early Childhood Caries: A Team Approach To Prevention and
Oral Self Care: Strategies for Preventive Dentistry. These texts may be purchased
separately through the course website.
Dr. Philip Weinstein is Professor of Dental Public Health
Sciences and Adjunct Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and Psychology at the University of
Washington. A Licensed Clinical Psychologist, he is the Director of the Dental Behavioral
Science Research Program at the University of Washington and co-Director of the Dental
Fears Research clinic, where he maintains a private practice.
Dr. Peter Milgrom is Adjunct Professor of Pediatric Dentistry
and Professor in the Departments of Dental Public Health Sciences in the School of
Dentistry and Health Services in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine. He is
emeritus director of the Dental Fears Research Clinic at the University of Washington. Dr.
Milgrom is author of five books and over 225 publications in refereed journals, and has
been a member of the University of Washington School of Dentistry faculty since 1974.
