Course Content

The learner will gain knowledge in the clinical management of orthodontic patients to maximize treatment and oral hygiene compliance through behavioral and pharmacological modalities.

 

Educational Objectives

At completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

 

  1. Familiar and have gained experience with multiple pharmacological modalities (fluorides, antimicrobials, protective cements, etc.) for the prevention of white spots in orthodontic patients.
  2. Familiar with methods for assessing the nature of adherence related problems in orthodontic practice, including complications such as childhood depression and family or school stress.
  3. Able to describe how the "stages of change" model applies to orthodontic patients and orthodontic-related adherence problems.
  4. Able to describe how to conduct a "run-in" with an orthodontic patient before placing fixed appliances.
  5. Familiar with the concept of therapeutic alternatives for patients for whom adherence with oral hygiene instructions is sub-optimal.
  6. Knowledgeable about oral hygiene aids for the orthodontic patient.

 

Required Text:

  • Weinstein and Milgrom, Oral Self Care: Strategies for Preventive Dentistry, 4th ed.
  • A syllabus with additional readings will be made available to the enrollee.

 

Dr. Peter Milgrom is a dentist and Professor in the Departments of Dental Public Health Sciences in the School of Dentistry and Health Services in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine. He is director of the Northwest/Alaska Center to Reduce Oral Health Disparities. Dr. Milgrom is author of five books and over 200 publications in refereed journals, and has been a member of the University of Washington School of Dentistry faculty since 1974.

 

Dr. Philip Weinstein is Professor of Dental Public Health Sciences and Adjunct Professor of Pediatric Dentistry and Psychology at the University of Washington. A Licensed Clinical Psychologist, he is the Director of the Dental Behavioral Science Research Program at the University of Washington and co-Director of the Dental Fears Research clinic, where he maintains a private practice.

 

Dr. Douglas Ramsay is Professor and Chair of Dental Public Health Sciences, and Professor of Orthodontics and Pediatric Dentistry. His primary research interests are in the areas of experimental psychology and clinical dental research. His ongoing research projects include the study of tolerance development to nitrous oxide as well as methods to improve patient adherence with therapeutic regimens.
