Dates and Venue: This course is normally conducted in the Seattle area and  involves two days in addition to preparation and homework. However, due to the pandemic, it is currently being conducted Virtually. Participants  will be expected to be on-line the full period from 8 AM to 5 PM  each of the days.

 

Instructors generally work with one participant at a time.

Course Content

This course is designed to facilitate remediation; it is an educational intervention particularly suitable for dentists, dental hygienists, denturists, and assistants who may under discipline by licensing boards or other regulatory agencies. Any licensed professional practicing within the United States may enroll. This course is not intended for problems related to substance abuse.

 

The goals of this course are to provide information about dental ethics and state regulations and to provide exercises and experiences that will lead to ethical decision-making and problem solving.

 

Educational Objectives

At completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Locate state dental regulations and the ADA Code of Ethics on line.
  2. Specify ethical principles and their relationship to one another.
  3. Define professionalism and specify its obligations.
  4. Describe duty to treat and its limitations.
  5. Describe how best to manage the situation when
    5a) You see a colleague drink heavily and then provide care to a patient.
    5b) You have a new patient that has substandard care provided by a colleague.
    5c) You see a colleague proposition a patent or staff member.
  6. Identify examples of advertising that do not meet ADA ethical standards.
  7. Specify under what conditions it is acceptable to remove existing amalgam fillings.
  8. List two or more ethical problems associated with managed care.
  9. Describe how communication influences patient satisfaction and how informed consent influences this process and the likelihood of litigation and charges.
  10. Specify 3 negotiation/mediation strategies.
  11. Discriminate boundary crossings from boundary violations.
  12. Define dual relationships and the problems inherent in such relationships.
  13. Given specific ethical problems, specify ethical principles, advisory opinions, and state regulations that are relevant and describe at least two ethical responses to the problems and their rationale.
  14. From the perspective of the regulatory agency, summarize in writing the charges levied against you without defending yourself; identify the charges in terms of ethical principles or obligations that were unfulfilled, ignored, or unknown.

Dr. Philip Weinstein is Emeritus Professor of Oral Health Sciences, Adjunct Professor of Pediatric Dentistry, and Psychology at the University of Washington. A Licensed Clinical Psychologist, formerly the Director of the Dental Behavioral Science Research Program at the University of Washington, and co-Director of the Dental Fears Research clinic where he maintained a private practice.

 

Dr. Peter Milgrom is a dentist, Emeritus Professor in the Departments of Oral Health Sciences in the School of Dentistry and Health Services, in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine. He is adjunct Professor of Pediatric Dentistry. Dr Milgrom is also a Managing Member of the Advantage Silver Dental Arrest, LLC. He is author of five books and over 325 publications in refereed journals, and has been a member of the University of Washington School of Dentistry faculty since 1974.
